Chocolate: A Theme for All Days

Getting through a day is ever so much nicer if you have an assortment of chocolate to sustain you. I am incredibly lucky right now to have been surprised with an exciting selection by my friends, so that I'm currently prepared with a little something for any occasion. Details below, so you can all be a little envious of my (rapidly disappearing) stash:

Bibliofilly brought Red Velvet Smidgens over when she came to watch the All-Star Game. She hoped it was ok that they are filled with a cherry creme - it's MORE than OK! They were delicious while watching hockey and are now perfect for minor celebrations (I changed the laundry, yay me!), soothing irritation (wedging one into my mouth at the end of a phone call when I might otherwise spout an expletive or three), or a quick pick-me-up (What? It's only 2pm? It feels like midnight already!).

A tin of the new dark chocolate covered peppermint Altoids arrived in the mail from Wisa Wisa. WOW! They are like crunchy Junior Mints...tasty and great for aggravation management - you can crunch your frustrations away (What made you think carving on a book cover would be a good idea? [crunch-crunch]). They also provide a bit of comic relief for those around me because I tend to sneeze a lot when I crunch up Altoids.

Finally, Fraukow (frequent sender of fantastic things), sent my V-day present early because she just couldn't wait and neither could I. Chocolate Tea with Rosebuds might sound a little weird but it is quite wonderful when brewed. The tea is fragrant and mild, with just a hint of chocolate as an afterthought. Perfect for a cold day, which we are suddenly having quite a few of. Also, she got it from Lana's The Little House, so it reminds me of the afternoon we took tea in the fairy-tale house and good memories are always nice to think of!

You posted this on THE DAY I decided to try to go w/out chocolate. My success: (1) only 4 jumbo cashews covered with dark chocolate (cashews are high protien, so these don't count); (2) only two brownies (I sifted out the chocolate chunks, so the brownies don't count)(3) I ate some of the sifted-out chocolate chunks (covered with brownie powder, so they don't count). I even heard about chocolate flavored salami on the radio today...I nearly went for some, and I HATE salami. Your photos put me over the edge. You torturer, you!

I love chocolate, but not chocolate cake! Funny that; but, nonetheless, I really need to start away from it...

Altoids are another favourite of mine, but chocolate one's? I've NEVER seen those, and I think I've tasted all their flavours. I even have a photo at home of a can of Altoid's, black ones!

Wisa Wisa has proved herself once again to truly be Empress, as I too have been indulging in them---but I haven't been crunching. They're perfect when you need a quick pick-me-up: a chocolate version of the one-night stand? There's no relationship involved in the same way there is in say, truffle cake.

Speaking of truffle cake, I just made one for a potluck and I'm only sharing the recipe because I love you:
Melt 3 cups chocolate chips with 2 sticks butter. Cool slightly. Whip 6 eggs for 7 minutes until tripled in volume, then fold into the chocolate. Pour into a parchment lined round cake pan and bake in a water bath for 40 min at 325 (I think). Refrigerate at least 3 hours. Share if you must.

@grandmoo: You know I waited for JUST the right day! :) Oh, and the chocolate salami? Run. Screaming.

@navilyn: Are the black Altoid's licorice? The chocolate covered ones are new - I'm told you can get them in Target!

@spice: If I didn't already love you, I would SO love you now! Think I can make and eat a whole truffle cake while Chris and the kids are at hockey Saturday morning?

Yes they are! I'll dash to Target tomorrow...

You know, I actually don't eat chocolate. It's possible that I may regret telling you this.

Oops. The temperature is actually 425, not 325 for the truffle cake.
